On Friday we will have been meeting at The Churston Court Hotel under the banner of TIP for 16 years!

Nearly every Monday during that time we have been there to meet people who share our interest or have an experience they want help understanding. Hopefully we will be there for many years to come!

To celebrate, we are having a joint birthday/xmas do at the White Hart Hotel, home of TIP-X, our fledgling group in Exeter...........a meal with a bit of a vigil afterwards! Just the way we like to party!

So it's HAPPY BIRTHDAY TIP!!!!!!!!!!

The night before our investigation, this event will be taking place...a walk around the grounds and house by torchlight! This is a more family orientated affair but it will still be equally spooky!
So why not do both if you fancy being scared twice!

This is our main project for this Halloween, a public event at the beautiful and very atmospheric National Trust property at Overbeck's, Salcombe.

If you have never been there it is well worth a visit as it commands stunning views over the estuary with an amazing layout of terraced gardens as well as a museum and restaurant area that it shares with the attached Youth Hostel.

All this will be accesible throughout the night of our investigation, making it a unique opportunity to explore the premises after dark...if you dare!!

The Old Church House Inn, Torbryan is considered to be one of the most haunted pubs in the South West. In this evocative 14th Century coaching inn which has been visited by both Henry VII and Henry VIII, numerous paranormal experiences have been reported, including mysterious footsteps and creaking floor-boards, lights turning on and off, additionally, strange sighs are heard, people get touched on the back of the neck and feel as though someone is blowing in their ear. Many visitors have seen ghostly apparitions and heard eerie sounds late at night...the seated figure of a monk…the images of faces appearing in the wooden paneling in the bar area…In the main bar, candles relight themselves. A spotlight in the bar sometimes turns itself off at 2.30 each afternoon, then switches itself on again at 3pm. The imprint of two faces has also been seen in the 'Armada' wall. (The pub is constructed from oak paneling and beams salvaged from Spanish ships that were part of the Spanish Armada). In the lounge, a figure has been seen descending a set of stairs that were taken out years ago. Disembodied footsteps can be heard moving towards a bathroom, though they fade away if followed. A phantom man in a cloak has been reported in the inn.

The fate of Starlight-the deer!

I have a rather sad tale to tell!

During our last monthly Dartmoor walk, we came across the remains of an animal, at the time unidentified. The remains consisted of a long piece of windpipe caught on a barbwire fence, a pool of dried blood, and,upon closer inspection, what turned out to be the stomach of the deceased animal on the other side of the fence in the trees.

We contemplated our find for a short while, trying to determine what it had once been and where the rest of it might be..........a search in the area revealed no further remains. This kept us perplexed for the rest of our walk and in fact up until a few days ago, when I chanced upon a possible answer.

I happened to be out walking in the Scoriton area, not far from the scene of our find, when I felt compelled to look at the village notice board, near to which I had parked my car. The first thing that caught my eye was a photo of a deer attached to a handwritten note which read:

"Starlight has gone walkabout from the deer park on Scoriton Down. Anyone with any information as to her whereabouts please contact the number below."

Scoriton Down is just the other side of the brook that runs through the woods where we made our discovery...........I didn't have the heart to ring the number and tell them about the possible grisly fate that had befallen poor Starlight!

Poltimore House Heritage Open Day

Poltimore House can be found in Exeter. It is an atmospheric old building badly in need of a bit of restoration.........in fact it nearly got it big time from a certain BBC programme of that very name a few years ago now. Sadly it didn't win, but fortunately plans to give it a new lease of life continue apace, thanks to its ever increasing band of friends.

Last weekend it opened its doors as part of the National Heritage Days events. I'd been wanting to visit for some time now, my interest being piqued by reports of it being haunted, and I was not disappointed!

At present only the downstairs areas are safe for public access, and these serve to give the visitor a taste of how the house once looked, which only goes to make one wonder how it got into this sorry state in the first place!

The most interesting part for me was going into the inner outer courtyard which is now inside! Due to the roof of metal sheeting that has been erected over it to preserve the remains from further damage by the elements. To me this now gives it the feel of being on some sort of film set for an historical drama, as you gaze up at the surviving Tudor gables and tower with the "roof" above!

And yes the place is haunted! I saw and heard enough to make me want to return at a later date, and the next chance for that is the next Open Day on Sunday 18th October.

I would highly recommend this for a visit..........whilst there, take a stroll round the grounds as well-take a look at the recently discovered pet cemetery, indulge in a cream tea in the chapel, oh and by the way, watch out for the bats!

An evening of Ska and weird stuff with Too Hot!

Had an interesting evening..........apart from a lot of dancing that is!

The Ska night was at the Spinning Wheel on Paignton seafront. It's only a small place so quite intimate on the dance floor! So intimate that you can't help over hearing peoples conversations!

As I went in there were a few people at the bar chatting about what sounded like "spooky" stuff! They clocked my Ghostbusters T-shirt (that I just happened to be wearing!) and were a bit freaked out by the coincidence of it all!

I was toying with the idea of introducing myself when I overheard another conversation at a table near the dance area.........more spooky stuff! This time I couldn't resist and I offered them one of my cards. Then came the coincidences for me......turns out one of the women sitting there lives in Penny's Cottage in Torquay! Well haunted apparantly and recently repaired after being gutted by a fire. One of the other women who took a card was only the lead singer of the band!

I don't know if this will come to anything, but as they took cards, they might just get in touch and perhaps attend a meeting. That's when I got my idea of a charity Ska night........

Totnes Ghost Walks

Wow! Test worked ok so here we go! No stopping me now! LOL

Last night I helped my mates Bob & Mark with the ghost walks that they run weekly on Tuesday nights throughout the Summer season. Yesterdays was kind of special as it was for the Totnes Festival that runs this week.

Whilst Bob guided the main walk, Mark and I lay in wait at various points en route to add a few thrills to the proceedings..........unintentionally I nearly gave a poor woman a heart attack as she walked her dog through the churchyard opposite the Guildhall. Her dog seemed pleased to see me but I don't think she was!

I won't spoil the event for those who couldn't attend last night by revealing what exactly Mark & I got up to...........suffice to say I see you before you see me!!!!

The plan is to do the "special" again during Halloween week, on the Tuesday before actually, when hopefully more readers can attend.

Thanks to those members of TIP who did manage to get there last night..........you know who you are!

AN ADVERTISING hoarding for a sci-fi exhibition at Torquay Museum has vanished into thin air.

Head-scratching staff are even thinking their 'Alien Invasion' banner may have been swiped by visitors from outer space.

"There is no other explanation because our CCTV cameras run continuously — and there is no sign of the thing being taken," said bemused marketing manager Carl Smith.

Police have been notified of the crime which happened at the bottom end of Babbacombe Road some time between 10am and 1pm on Saturday.

"We have been through the CCTV at least half-a-dozen times, but we still can't find the time when it was taken. The cameras run continuously," explained Carl.

He added, with tongue in cheek: "Maybe it's been beamed up by aliens. You never know. It's one line of inquiry."

The banner, valued at £150, is four metres long and a metre deep.

Carl noticed the hoarding had disappeared when he turned up at the museum at 1pm. The CCTV shows the banner flapping in the breeze just three hours before.

"We put it up a few weeks ago. It was tied outside the museum with six strong plastic cables. It must have taken a very sharp knife or pair of scissors to cut the thing off," he said.

He added: "Our Alien Invasion exhibition is not what you would automatically associate with a museum which we believe should be vibrant and up-to-date, showcasing contemporary popular culture as well as artifacts from ancient civilisations."

He said Alien Invasion was proving to be 'amazingly popular'.

"We have received double our usual visitor numbers since the exhibition opened four weeks ago. It showcases props and costumes from some of the best sci-fi movies ever made," he said.

The exhibition features an array of Star Wars characters, Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper among them, together with many Dr Who props, including two Daleks and a Tardis.

There is also a full-scale Alien from the Hollywood blockbuster of the same name starring Sigourney Weaver, along with an Alien egg and the creepy Facehugger which injected the alien into John Hurt's stomach.

Other head-turners are a full-sized Robocop, an alien host from X-Files, Mars Attack Martians and Marvin the Martian.

Carl said: "We would really like our Alien Invasion banner back — whether it's been abducted by aliens or sci-fi fans."

Police confirmed they are investigating the theft.

A spokesman said: "Presumably someone has cut the fixings and made off with it. We would appreciate any information from people in the area who may have seen this happening — or who knows of someone who has such a hoarding in their possession."

It will showcase stunning costumes and props from some of the best sci-fi movies and TV series ever made, including Star Wars, Dr Who, Alien, Predator, Robocob, Terminator and many more.
